“The Joist” is a super blend that represents the essence of our winemaking philosophy and the unique character of our three exceptional vineyard sites in Calistoga. Each vineyard has contributed its distinct character to this wine, resulting in a blend that showcases the complexity and elegance that Napa Valley is renowned for. The Pozzan Vineyard, with its deep, well-drained soils, imparts rich, concentrated flavors. Larkmead Vineyard, one of Napa Valley's historic vineyards, brings a vibrant acidity and floral notes, while the Winfield Vineyard adds layers of dark fruit and finely structured tannins. On the nose, it captivates with an aromatic symphony of blackcurrant, crushed blackberry, and dark cherry, intertwined with enticing notes of cassis, graphite, licorice and driftwood. This wine's palate is a rich tapestry of lush, velvety tannins balanced by a vibrant acidity that imparts both freshness and structure.
The Vintage
The 2022 growing season in Napa Valley was nothing short of dramatic, often described as “the tale of two harvests.” Early in the season, conditions were ideal, with warm days and cool nights allowing for optimal ripening. Although a late-season heatwave at the beginning of September was challenging, the well-established canopy management and farming practices in our vineyards ensured that our fruit retained its best possible freshness and acidity during this period.

The 2022 growing season was a test of both patience and vineyard management. Early in the season, Calistoga, like much of Napa, enjoyed near-perfect weather, with warm days and cool nights—ideal for the slow, even ripening that Cabernet Sauvignon demands. However, the September heatwave posed significant challenges for winemakers across the Valley. After tasting through the wines, we decided that blending the three vineyard sites would result in the best wine for the 2022 Hobel vintage. The resulting blend, The Joist, is a symphony of each vineyard's most expressive elements and epitomizes our winemaking philosophy to put the best wine possible in the bottle.
